In most of our homes, an oil lamp is lit daily before the altar of the Lord, either at dawn or dust or twice a day. Even today, our parents are a lot stricter when it comes to the timing & the discipline of lighting the lamp. We cannot deny the special energetic feeling that swipes over us when we know that the lamp is lit. Light symbolically leads us from darkness to light and it also symbolizes knowledge. Knowledge gives us the everlasting wealth of removing ignorance and takes us towards higher ideals. In our quest to discover traditional wisdom of lamps, we bring to you brass ‘vilaku’ from Nachiar Kovil near Kumbakonam and Vagai kulam in Tirunelveli district. The ‘Nagasu’ workmanship on the vilaku is hand done and gives it the beauty beyond words. It takes these traditional craftsmen around 10-20 days to make a lamp depending on the level of work.
