Hamlei is a traditional gravy pot made using Longpi pottery technique from Manipur. Locally called “Loree Hamlei,” this cookware is still used in everyday kitchens across the region. It is made by crushing and blending two types of locally found rocks, instead of regular clay.
This handcrafted gravy pot is designed for slow, even cooking. From dal to chicken curry, it helps bring out deeper flavours while keeping the food warm for longer. It works well on gas stoves and can also be used in microwave ovens.

What is longpi pottery?
Longpi Pottery is a mix of two types of stone (Serpentine & weathered rock) which are finely powdered and mixed to for a clay, this is layed out using bamboo sticks and moulded and double backed. This is the only type of clay/stone cookware that is not done on a potter's wheel.
Is Manipur Black Pottery Breakable?
Yes. They are breakable. But if maintained well (Cleaning and Stored separately from other kitchen cookware), these can last for a very long time!
